Community News.

Generation gap is 100 years

All five generations of the Harper family, from Whitburn, got together for the first time to meet baby Zak.It's not very often you get five generations of the one family.

And particularly not when there's 100 years between the youngest and the oldest family member.

They are: Jessie Malcolm (100), who will be 101 on 21 June; Margaret Harper (77); Derek Harper (53); Mark Harper (28) and the newest addition, Zak Harper (4 months).

To mark the occasion, the family all enjoyed a meal.

Inveralmond Community High School is holding a ladies night fundraiser from 7 - 10pm on Friday 15 June.

Tickets cost £5 and include a free glass of wine.
Treatments are approximately £5 and include Indian head massage, reiki healing, hot stones, nails polish and manicure, massage, waxing and tarot cards

Various stalls will also be there.

Tickets can be bought and treatments booked at the school's community reception area.

Plant pots wanted for community garden

Does anyone have any unused pots for planting, or any half bags of compost, that they would like to donate to the Armadale community garden ?

The garden volunteers would be very appreciative.

Advice Shop's information stall

The Council's Advice shop will be holding an information stall in the foyer area of ASDA, Livingston, from 10am - 4pm on Thursday 24 May.

People are encouraged to come along and find out more information about the Welfare Reforms and how these changes may impact them.

Trained advisors will also be able to offer Income Maximisation checks to ensure people are getting their full entitlements.

Community cinema for hire

Fauldhouse Community Development Trust's new 40-seat cinema is available for hire.

The cinema can be hired by individuals, groups, businesses or anyone who wants to show a movie, make a presentation or hold a corporate event etc.

No special equipment is needed, as you can just plug and play your DVD or PowerPoint presentation on the full-size cinema screen.

The cinema is ideal for community groups, or even a group of friends that simply want to view their favourite film on the big screen.

Subsidy for traders at Farmers' Market

Broxburn & Uphall Traders? Association has announced the introduction of a subsidy for local traders hiring stalls at the bimonthly Farmers Market in Broxburn.

Starting with the June market, which takes place on Saturday 9 June, any BUTA member taking a stall will have the stall fee paid for by the Association.

And any non-member small trader who lives or operates
within the local ward area will have £25 contribution toward the cost. This subsidy will stay in place until the end of the year or until the market establishes itself.

As there are only a limited number of stalls available, local traders must pre-book. This can be done by contacting BUTA via the website at www.buta.org.uk/contact.htm (new window) or by contacting Katrena Allan on 01506 857570 during office hours.

Broadly speaking

West Lothian Broadly Scots Society have Scottish writer and broadcaster Billy Kay as guest speaker at their next meeting.

The title of his talk is "Thaim wi a guid Scots tongue in their heid are fit tae gang ower the warld" - Billy Kay talks aboot Scots: The Mither Tongue - Hame an Awa.

The venue is the Cran-Gervier Room, Bathgate Partnership Centre, South Bridge Street, at 7pm on Wednesday 6 June.

Anyone with an interest in the Scots language is welcome to attend. Admission is free.

Gymnasts on the move

Astro Gymnastics are moving to a new facility in Bellsquarry.

The non-profit community club will be moved in time for their summer gymnastics programme.

The programme includes pre-school, recreational, display competitive acrobatic gymnastics as well as Freestyle Gymnastics (free running) and PlayGym.

Spaces are also available now for booking into regular classes from August.

Gordon launches new book in his local library

Best-selling author Gordon Anthony will be launching his second paperback in the West Lothian library where he's a regular customer.

Gordon?s long-awaited Roman Britain novel, 'World?s End' will be launched at Carmondean Connected at 6.30pm on Thursday 7 June.

Gordon, from Carmondean, will talk about the new book and sign advance copies. To reserve a place for this event, contact Carmondean Connected on 01506 777602.

To date, Gordon has also published several e-books. His first paperback - 'In the Shadow of the Wall' - was an Amazon best-seller.

Gordon, who is registered blind, will also be at Carmondean Connected on Saturday 9 June. This will be a drop-in event and copies of 'World?s End' will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Singing for your health

A new 'singing for health' group, aimed at over 50s, is set to start in West Lothian from Thursday 31 May.

Organised by Ageing Well, the group will meet at Whitburn Bowling Club from 1 - 2.30pm.

Tea and coffee will be served from 1 - 1.30pm, followed by singing from 1.30 - 2.30pm.

No experience is required, it's just fun and friendly signing with an experienced musician.

Everyone is welcome to attend and £1 contribution per session would be appreciated.

Spaces at after-school club

An after-school Club for children with additional support needs in West Lothian has spaces for children of primary and secondary school age.

Based in St Kentigern's Academy, Blackburn, the Tree Club has spaces on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

The club also welcomes requests for its summer scheme.  Youngsters do not have to attend the after-school club to be eligible for  the summer  scheme, which runs for three weeks from 2 to 20 July.

Rediscover the Regal

The Regal Community theatre, Bathgate, is holding an open day from 11am - 4pm on Saturday 9 June.

It's a free day out, with a host of activities such as drama, dance, arts, photography, crafts demonstrations and taster sessions for all ages.

There will also be a variety of live music, children's entertainment and activities as well as a craft fair.
